If you’re an entrepreneur, ideas are bouncing around in your head all day long. That’s just the way it is and the truth is that the presense of ideas isn’t necessarily a sign of success – it’s what you do with the ideas that matter.
Think about it this way. Ideas are Bricks.
All entrepreneurs have lots of bricks. Crazy amounts of bricks! We are IDEA CRAZY most of the time. We read an article and it sparks ideas. We listen to radio and it sparks ideas. We watch football and the commercials spark ideas. We dream ideas. We wake up with ideas. We fall asleep with ideas. We have ideas in the shower, in church, on the road, in Walmart, at the movies, doing laundy, hanging out with friends… ideas never stop!
So bricks aren’t the problem.
It’s what we do with these bricks that make us or break us.
If you chase down every idea, you’re drive yourself nuts. You’ll have EADD(Entrepreneurial Attention Deficit Disorder) and never get anywhere.
A smart entrepreneur doesn’t look at his bricks to figure out what he wants to build. He decides what he wants to build, and then he considers whether any of his bricks will fit into the plan.
A Successful entrepreneur doesn’t build a business around his bricks – he chooses a target market and creates a plan to serve their needs. He carefully crafts a plan that will make him indispensible to his target market by providing services and products that have a unique selling point.
On any given day you’ll get a one, two, five or ten ideas. They’ll all seem feasible at first glance and maybe they are. But the question to ask yourself is – does this idea serve my business and my target market?
Unless you have a clear picture in your mind of the business you want to create, you won’t be able to make smart decisions about the ideas that come along. Some ideas are great – but they don’t suit your overall plan.
So let’s let the bricks lay there for a little while and go to work on that plan
Who do you want to be? Who do you want to serve? Why will they want what you offer?
