I’m continuing my Cross Blog Conversation with Traci Knoppe of Genesis Blogging. Traci is going to be my guest next week at the Hot Seminar Series! I started this CBC with her a few days ago. You can read the first post here and her reply can be found here.
She has asked me: “Have you ever had one of your blogs, or one of your client’s blogs or the blog of anyone you know ever been hacked? If so, did you learn how or where the hacker got in?”
My Reply: Oh the Hacks I’ve Seen!
Traci, I don’t think any of my own blogs have ever been hacked but several of my friends and client’s blogs have been violated over the years. Try as I might to emphasize the importance of keeping WordPress fully updated, there have always been a few who ignore the update alerts and ended up hacked.
In most cases, the hack was directly related to an old version of WordPress but there was at least one instance where the hack came through a plugin that created an open door.
Speaking of knowing how a hacker gained access, I understand that your web host’s configuration of permissions can create vulnerability for WordPress sites. At Mom Webs I’ve made sure to ask our host tech to be fully aware of this and take steps to make sure that we’re not putting any of our hosting clients at risk. I hope you’ll be speaking to the importance of working with a solid web host during your talk on security as well?
Another question for you, I think some people think of a ‘hack’ as being super obvious, but isn’t it true that some WordPress hacks are quite subtle and hard to spot?
I can’t wait to talk with you next Wednesday!
Traci will be posting her reply on her blog soon!
